North Dakota is for the Birds!

bird_in_hand.jpgBirdwatchers come to our area to observe prairie species, some of which are relatively rare in other parts of the country.  We have a birdwatchers paradise in the Turtle Mountains and the prairies and riverbanks below them.  J. Clark Salyer Refuge is just minutes away.  Lord's Lake is close, too.  North Dakota has the largest number of refuges in the United States.  These refuges provide excellent vantage points to observe, study and photograph the hundreds of species that call these places home, for many months of the year.

At Homestead, we are actively trying to promote and explore the bird watching phenomenon in our area.  It's a wonderful natural resource.  We have started construction on walking trails that wind through the trees and around a dam where lots of wildlife seek refuge, not just birds.  We have a lookout at the top of our lodge that provides a different vantage point for wildlife viewing.
